What the program includes

  • Individualized assessment and treatment plan
  • Practical education about osteoarthritis and joint replacement
  • Specific, realistic exercises tailored to you
  • A focus on improving strength, mobility, and everyday function
  • Support before and after joint replacement

How it works

Every patient starts with a thorough assessment. From there, you and your physiotherapist build an individualized program around your current strength and mobility, your questions, and the activities you want to improve, whether that is climbing stairs, walking farther, sport, or travelling.

If joint replacement is being considered or planned, your physiotherapist can help you understand your options, prepare for surgery, and work toward your best possible recovery. Your program can be adapted around your surgery date, your surgeon’s recommendations, and the instructions provided by your surgical team.

Why timing matters

Physiotherapy can help you live better with osteoarthritis, whether or not surgery is planned. Exercise, education, and practical strategies can reduce pain, improve strength and mobility, and make everyday activities easier.

If joint replacement is part of your plan, use the time before surgery to prepare: people with better strength and function beforehand often recover more easily.

Waiting for surgery can be difficult. Research shows that pain, function, and quality of life may worsen during longer waits for hip or knee replacement. Staying active and supported during this time can help you maintain strength, mobility, and confidence.

Lisa’s experience and this program

This program was created by Lisa Jasper, PT, PhD to bring together her more than 30 years of clinical practice, research, and teaching experience in osteoarthritis, joint replacement, and rehabilitation.

Lisa has practiced physiotherapy since 1995. Her University of Alberta research and published work cover physical activity after total knee arthroplasty, knee replacement outcomes, and rehabilitation in rural communities.

The program is delivered by a team of physiotherapists who share a strong interest in working with people living with hip and knee osteoarthritis and those preparing for or recovering from joint replacement. Care is evidence-based and tailored to each patient’s goals, concerns, and circumstances.

Fees and insurance

Fees are receiptable as physiotherapy services with a licensed physiotherapist, so check what your extended health plan may reimburse.

Our clinical services are available to Alberta residents; physiotherapy is provincially regulated, and other provinces will follow as licensure is added.
