A six-week group program for people living with persistent pain

painUpdated is an education and coaching program for people living with persistent or chronic pain. Over six weekly virtual sessions, a small group works through what current pain science says about understanding pain, pacing your energy, sleep, nutrition and mindfulness, and how to build activity safely, with time to ask questions and hear from others in the same position.

If you have been told to rest, to medicate, or that you will simply have to live with it, and you want a different approach, this program is for you.

From a past participant

“Taking part in the PainUpdated course has been a transformative experience for me. From the very first interaction with Lisa Jasper, it was clear how knowledgeable she is. She has a remarkable ability to share trustworthy, up-to-date, evidence-based information in a way that is easy to understand and process, something that’s especially valuable when navigating complex topics like pain. The course explored a wide range of meaningful topics, including pacing your energy, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness, and developing a deeper understanding of chronic pain. Each session offered practical insights I could immediately apply to my daily life.

One of the most impactful aspects of the program was the sense of community created within the group. I’ve been living with chronic pain for almost nine years, and this was the first time I genuinely didn’t feel alone in it. Hearing other participants share their experiences so openly made it feel safe for me to acknowledge my own challenges. Their stories helped me realise that what I’m going through is real, valid, and shared by others, and that sense of connection was incredibly meaningful. Lisa has been a great host, encouraging us all to share our experiences and answering all our questions.”

What the six weeks cover

Each weekly session takes one part of living with persistent pain and works through what the evidence says and what you can do with it. Sessions are practical, and there is time in each one for questions and discussion.

Understanding pain

What current pain science says about why pain persists, and why that matters for what you do next.

Pacing your energy

Planning and progressing activity so you can do more of what matters without the boom-and-bust cycle.

Sleep

How sleep and pain affect each other, and practical steps that help.

Nutrition

What the evidence does and does not support when it comes to food and pain.

Mindfulness

Simple, evidence-based ways to change your relationship with pain and stress.

The group

A small group of people who understand what living with persistent pain is like, sharing experiences and questions each week.

Who leads it

The program is led by Lisa Jasper, PhD. Lisa is an Teaching Professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, where she coordinates the Certificate in Pain Management and teaches graduate courses on the multidimensional nature of pain and the management of clinical pain conditions.

She completed a master’s degree examining chronic pain mechanisms and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science, and her published research includes work on chronic pain, chronic pain programs, arthritis, physical activity, and access to care. She is a member of the Pain Society of Alberta and the Canadian Pain Society, and for more than 30 years has taught health professionals and worked with people living with persistent pain.
