  • A focus on improving strength, mobility, and everyday function
  • Support before and after joint replacement

How it works

Every patient starts with a thorough assessment. From there, you and your physiotherapist build an individualized program based on your unique situation, including your current strength and mobility, the questions you have, and the activities you want to improve, whether that is climbing stairs, walking farther, sport, or travelling.

If joint replacement is being considered or planned, your physiotherapist can help you understand your options, prepare for surgery, and work toward your best possible recovery. Your program can be adapted around your surgery date, your surgeon’s recommendations, and the instructions provided by your surgical team. We can also help guide you through each stage of the surgical journey, from preparing beforehand to rebuilding strength, mobility, and confidence afterward.

What happens in a virtual physiotherapy session

Why timing matters

Physiotherapy can help you live better with osteoarthritis, whether or not surgery is planned. Exercise, education, and practical strategies can reduce pain, improve strength and mobility, and make everyday activities easier.

If joint replacement is part of your plan, it is important to use the time before surgery to prepare. People with better strength and function before surgery often recover more easily afterward.

Waiting for surgery can be difficult. Research shows that pain, function, and quality of life may worsen during longer waits for hip or knee replacement. Staying active and supported during this time can help you maintain as much strength, mobility, and confidence as possible.

Preparation also means knowing what to expect. Understanding realistic outcomes and identifying the activities that matter most to you can help guide both your decision-making and your rehabilitation.

Our goal is to help you live as well as possible with osteoarthritis, understand your options, prepare for surgery if needed, and feel supported through every stage of the journey.

Lisa’s experience and this program

This program was created by Lisa Jasper, PT, PhD to bring together her more than 30 years of clinical practice, research, and teaching experience in osteoarthritis, joint replacement, and rehabilitation in a way that is practical and supportive for patients.

Lisa has practiced physiotherapy since 1995. Her research at the University of Alberta examined physical activity in older adults following total knee arthroplasty, and her published work has included research on knee replacement outcomes and rehabilitation for people living in rural communities.

The program is delivered by a team of physiotherapists who share a strong interest in working with people living with hip and knee osteoarthritis and those preparing for or recovering from joint replacement. The focus is always on evidence-based treatment options and helping those living with arthritis feel confident in its management. The team understands that every patient’s goals, concerns, and circumstances are different, and care is tailored accordingly.

Together, the program combines evidence-based rehabilitation with individualized guidance, helping patients better understand their options, prepare for surgery when needed, and build the strength, mobility, and confidence to stay active and do the things that matter most to them.
