Do I need a referral for physiotherapy in Alberta?

In Alberta you do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist — but there are a few situations where a physician's note can still matter.

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy in Alberta?

No. In Alberta you do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists are direct-access primary care providers, so you can book an appointment yourself — including a virtual physiotherapy appointment from anywhere in the province.

Physiotherapists in Alberta are regulated by the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta as primary care providers, which means you can book an assessment directly, without seeing a doctor first. That applies to in-person care and to virtual physiotherapy alike.

Your family doctor is still welcome in the loop. If you have a physician or primary care team, they can help you decide whether physiotherapy is a good next step — a referral simply is not a requirement.

When might a referral still matter?

The most common situation is insurance. Some extended health plans require a physician's note before they will reimburse physiotherapy, even though you never needed one to book. Before your first appointment, call the number on your benefits card and ask whether your plan requires a doctor's note for reimbursement.

The other situation is surgery. If you are preparing for or recovering from an operation, your surgeon's instructions come first, and your physiotherapist works within them.

Does physiotherapy funded by Alberta Health Services need a referral?

Not for the stream AHS describes for recent injuries. Alberta Health Services funds physiotherapy for some groups, including people with a recent fracture or orthopedic surgery — where it asks you to book within 12 weeks and states “No referral needed” — and low-income residents receiving specific provincial or federal income supports.

AHS-funded physiotherapy services are provided virtually or in-person through AHS facilities (outpatient) or community clinics that hold contracts with AHS. Yes. This is the same question many Albertans ask in different words, and the answer does not change: you do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Alberta, whether the appointment is in person or virtual.
