Does Alberta Health Care cover physiotherapy?

Does Alberta Health Care cover physiotherapy?

Partly. Alberta Health Services funds physiotherapy for specific groups — including people recovering from a recent fracture or orthopedic surgery and some low-income residents — while most Albertans pay out of pocket or use third-party benefits.

The province funds Alberta Health Services to deliver physiotherapy among other services, but physiotherapy is not a benefit most Albertans can bill to their Alberta Health Care card at a private clinic. As AHS puts it, Albertans can choose to pay out of pocket or use third-party benefits to access the physiotherapy service provider of their choice.

One detail worth knowing if you travel: on the province's list of what the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan covers, physiotherapy appears among the services that are not covered outside Alberta.

Who qualifies for AHS-funded physiotherapy?

AHS lists two main groups: people with a recent fracture or orthopedic surgery, where it asks you to book within 12 weeks and states no referral is needed, and low-income residents receiving specific provincial or federal income supports.

AHS-funded physiotherapy services are provided virtually or in-person through AHS facilities (outpatient) or community clinics that hold contracts with AHS. Funded clinics are listed in the AHS Adult Community Rehabilitation Directory.

Eligibility details can change, so confirm your situation directly with AHS or a funded clinic before you count on coverage.

What is the difference between AHS physiotherapy and private physiotherapy?

AHS-funded care is available to the eligible groups above, at no charge to the patient, through AHS facilities or contracted community clinics. Private physiotherapy is open to anyone: you choose your provider and your timing, and you pay out of pocket or through extended health benefits.
